MAC Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder: Review and Swatches

Review, Swatches and Price of Mac Prep+ Prime Transparent Finishing Loose Powder

By Contributor: Aruna

Loose powders are not something that I usually bothered with earlier. Having dry skin does have little perks of its own but as I grew more knowledgeable about makeup, I eventually realized its importance. MAC has always had a special place in my heart for giving me the perfect base products; the rising prices however are very successful in dampening my mood. So it was obvious on my hunt for the perfect powder for my bone dry skin that I end up in front of the MAC counter and got the Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder which I will review and swatch today.

My Review:

Having heard some serious raving from the internet world about the famous mac skinfinish natural, I insisted that the SA put that on my face first. I must confess and this may raise some eyebrows that I was unimpressed. Seeing my doubtful expression the SA, in turn, insisted that I try the mac prep +prime finishing powder on the other half of the face. I could see immediate results right after she applied the powder. My skin did not look a flat matte but it looked completely natural but without the slight oiliness of the foundation that one gets after a few hours of wear.

Mac prep+prime is a loose finishing powder and the packaging takes a bit of time getting used to. It does have a sifter inside it through which one get powder from the jar. The powder is extremely finely milled and some of it does go up in the air even when you tap jar without its lid.  You can, of course, get this powder in a pressed form also but the store that I went to was out of stock. The jar contains 9 grams of product in it, which, in my opinion will, at the least, last a good 9 to 10 months.

On applying the powder after you have done your foundation, you will see an immediate difference which is slight but effective. It absorbs the extra oil in the foundation but not so much that your skin is left looking flat. I have some open pores on my cheek and nose area which immediately look less noticeable when I apply this powder. It is highly efficient for setting concealer and no matter how long I have been outside my concealer never creases once I have set it with this powder. There is absolutely no flashback or any traces of white powder when I take a picture of my face in natural as well as artificial light.

But it is important that one keeps in mind to never overdo the powder as it may result in looking cakey over the foundation. With this powder, I recommend that the precision powdering technique should be applied unless you have extremely oily skin.

Pros of MAC Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder:

  • The texture is finely milled
  • Its translucent
  • Quantity will last a long time
  • Natural finish
  • Controls oil effectively

Cons of MAC Prep + Prime Transparent Powder:

  • Price (as usual)
  • Messy Packaging

Price: Rs.1850 (my wallet is crying!)

VNA Rating: 4.5/ 5

Conclusion: The texture of the powder is extremely soft and easy to work with. The advantage that one does have with this powder is that it is translucent. If this fits into your budget, then go for it!
