Everyone is aware of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge rage that is on almost all social networks. Hollywood celebrities are donating to this noble cause by pouring a bucket of ice water on themselves and Bollywood is not lagging behind and has quickly caught up with the western counterparts to make a noteworthy donation. This Ice Bucket Challenge was initiated with the purpose of raising awareness about the ALS or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (LouGehrig’s Disease)
Among the first Bollywood celebs to take up the Challenge was Sunny Leone. This adult movie star- turned- Bollywood actor has been nominated by family members as well as numerous fans. She was enthusiastic about the challenge and was all set in shorts and tee to throw ice water on herself. An ice water bucket was showered by her hubby on her. Sunny further nominated ‘Yo Yo Honey Singh’, popular Bollywood singer, to take up this challenge within the next 24 hours.
Another star of the Bollywood Film Industry, Akshay Kumar, also accepted the ALS Challenge that actor Riteish Deshmukh nominated him for. Akshay Kumar was shooting for a dance based reality show when he poured ice water in an already freezing temperature of 8 degrees. He later said that although he had asked one of the contestants to help him out, all of the 11 contestants showed up to assist him. He used sea water for the challenge to save useful, healthy water. And he ended up nominating Twinkle Khanna (his wife), Salman Khan, Johnny Lever and Ashwini Yardi.
Among other Bollywood celebs, Siddharth Malhotra accepted it from Riteish Deshmukh, quoting, ‘from one villain to another’. He further nominated Mohit Suri, Arjun Kapoor and Varun Dhawan to take it up.
Bollywood prima donna, Bipasha Basu, was nominated by a friend to take up the Ice Challenge. She said that she was doing this ‘for a good cause’. Her bucket’s size was comparatively smaller than the others but that was because she was suffering with fever and cold. She said (through her Twitter account) that this was done to ‘make her friend happy’. Bipasha further nominated Raj Kundra and Rocky S.
Abhishek Bachchan too did not stay behind and ended up accepting Riteish Deshmukh’s challenge. He was seen standing inside a bathtub, ready to brave the ice cold water. He further nominated Amitabh Bachchan (his father), the ‘Happy New Year’ team and Shah Rukh Khan to take up the ‘ALS Ice Bucket Challenge’.
Sania Mirza nominated Riteish Deshmukh. Riteish had been shooting for the film ‘Bangistan’ and further nominated Abhishek Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Ashish Choudhary and Pulkit Samrat- all of who are his very good friends.
Sonakshi Sinha too decided to take it up but in her own unique way. She said that instead of wasting precious water she would rather donate to the ‘ALS Foundation’- a very thoughtful way of saving both lives and water- way to go Sonakshi!
Editor: While there are people who are totally supporting the cause, there are some who find flaws in everything. But going by the stats, this viral challenge has helped the organisation raise 5 times more money than they usually do. And about the waster wastage, the appeal lies in watching people pour ice water on them. If not for that this challenge would have lost among hundreds of noble causes which never get attention. And Indians should be the last ones to talk of water wastage. Don’t we all just love holi?!
VNA is all for causes. A very noteworthy post coming up next week.
