There was once a point when contouring was a technique used and known only by makeup professionals who followed Kevyn Auction’s work. Today, Mario Dedivanovic, better known as the make up artist behind Kim Kardashian, Chrissy Teigen and Shay Mitchell, is known for putting contouring back on the map and starting a new worldwide trend. Mario has his own fan following now, and numerous make up enthusiasts flock to his social media for glimpses into his life, the products he uses and the clients he works with. Does he have any makeup secrets? We’re sure he does, so we thought it might be interesting to scout and find out a few of the best make up tips and secrets from Mario
A bit about Mario; he started his career as a fragrance consultant. Women would walk up to him at the store and think that he was the make up expert and he would apply make up for women, which they loved. He went on to assist many make up artists to the stars, before getting his first agent at 21. His client list includes Kim Kardashian, Chrissy Teigen, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Rosie Huntington-Whitely, Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, Gabrielle Union, Ciara, Eva Longoria and… PRIYANKA CHOPRA! If you’re wondering why our Bollywood A-Lister has been slaying her make up game, it’s probably Mario.
You’re probably going “Gasp! What? I don’t need a primer?” And yes you don’t need one! Especially if you live somewhere humid, you’re going to want to skip the primer because it feels heavier. In the indian market, we’re yet to have a local brand come out with a primer water, so till then take this tip from Mario instead. Mario prefers using an emollient moistur iser . Emollients are heavier creams, like a cold cream, that can be used to prep your skin before your make up to help it go on smoothly. Use it with a little glycerin to get that tackiness to let your make up last all day. That’s what he likes do with Kim.
When you’ve worked super hard on a smoky eye, the last thing you like to see is all the fall out that lies on top of the foundation you worked so hard to blend. Mario Dedivanovic recommends leaving the under eye area bare while you do your eye makeup, that way you can clean up the fall out. Another tip is to do your eye make up first, then you can clean up the fall out before you move on to the base.
When it comes to a flawless base like Kardashian, Mario trusts the Beauty Blender. While this is available at Nykaa, it’s pretty expensive at about 1899 INR. The Real Techniques Sponge is available at 625 INR and does the trick, but you don’t need to use these fancy make up sponges. Plenty of beauty stores offer reusable and disposable variants of the the make up sponge. Just make sure to use them damp for that nice even, dewy finish. The Kardashian MUA likes starting off with a foundation to do his base, but follows up with a beauty blender to
Dedivanovic suggests you get two shades for filling your eyebrows. You may be tempted to rely on that one pencil for a while, but the truth is if you want your eyebrows to look even and not drawn in, it’s preferable to go lighter with a shadow at the front and darker at the arch and tail of your eyebrow like he does with Kim Kardashian. Anastasia Beverly Hills is known for her brow products. For humid climates, try a wax based product or pomade or some tinted gel to lock in your brows. If you’re in an area where the climate is cooler, opt for a pencil and clear gel.
Mario is a fan of mixing multiple types of eyeliner in order to get it to stay longer. He uses 5-6 different varieties of gel, kohl and liquid eyeliners on the Kardashian clan to get the look he wants, and this way you can guarantee your look isn’t going anywhere! When applying eye makeup, breathe in through your nose so that you don’t tear up.
Make sure to invest in baby shampoo and tea tree oil. Dedivanovic believes that this is a winning duo when it comes to getting off all the grime you accumulate on your brushes. Kim’s makeup artist recommends to wash your brushes once a week if you use them often. Depending on how heavy and dirty your brushes are getting, it’s still recommended to wash them regularly. You can easily use a Johnson & Johnson’s baby shampoo for this.
Believe it or not, Mario isn’t a fan of contouring! He thinks that the contour that people use on instagram isn’t realistic for daily life. However, he has a makeup hack for face contouring like Kim Kardashian. The popular makeup artist says that when you contour your nose, you should make sure to to use a lighter contour colour than you would for the rest of your face. Dedivanovic also uses the baking technique a lot on his celebrity clients, which is basically when you take a loose powder and apply it liberally on the areas where you highlight. You let it sit for 5-10 minutes so that the moisture/humidity from your skin lets the powders settle and then dust off the excess.
Did you know there was an individual eyelash curler? The Japonesque Precision curler is a tool that will help you ensure all of your eyelashes are curled and primed for falsies. Kardashian makeup artist Mario also likes to stack individual lashes such as the Ardell Individual lashes in Medium and Long. You can use a regular eyelash curler. The holy-grail of all eyelash curlers is Shu Uemura eye lash curler, which was also talked about by iconic Gisele Bundchen in Devil Wears Prada movie. Also, Mario Dedivanovic says that slipping a powder puff on a finger and balancing it against your face helps give you stability when you’re working on your face without smudging your foundation.
When contouring your face, Mario Dedivanovic suggests using creams first then going over the areas with powder. Just like the face primer, Mario prefers to skip the eye primer and uses the cream based eyeshadows on Kim to help the other products he blends in to stick. He also makes sure to contour once, highlight twice and then use blush.
So should we do our hair first or make up? The jenner kardashian makeup artist suggests to do the make up first. When he gets clients who have had their hair done, they normally have hair spray on their face which prevents the products from sliding on well.
And there you have it, some pretty useful makeup tips from Mario Dedivanovic. If you’d like to have a look at the kind of make up products he uses, why don’t you watch out for my post on products that he and Kim Kardashian recommend?
