NYX Twin Cake Powder Compact Review
By Contributor: Mamta
We all are running late in our everyday lives due to the busy schedules and when it comes to everyday makeup something quick and easy is always preferred. So when I saw twin cake powder from NYX I picked it up promptly, it is a two way powder foundation, let’s get into more detail and start with the review and swatches.
NYX Claims: All it takes is a light dusting of our micro-milled pressed face powder to even skin tone, reduce the appearance of shine and create a picture-perfect finish. Sponge and mirror included. This twin cake powder will cover imperfections flawlessly! For soft and light finish, apply directly on face. Good for all skin types. Controls shine, silky and lightweight, reduces the appearance of pores without clogging. Includes SPF 10.
My Review:
The twin cake powder comes in a round shaped compact which is black in color with a catchy title “this is the best powder I’ve ever used” by Unknown. The packaging looks nice and is really sturdy as well. It has two compartments inside one for the sponge applicator and below that for the powder, which is very convenient and hygienic if you are using the sponge applicator. I have the color perfect tan which is a tad bit darker than my skin tone, but gets blended well. There are some 15 shades available but it’s really hard to get all the shades available in India. And also the shades do not go light to dark as in 1 being the lightest and 15 being the darkest, they are more so randomly numbered making it difficult to choose. As I also saw the shade 12 perfect beige which should ironically be lighter than this one but was actually darker!
Application is easy, you can use either the sponge provided or a powder brush and when used dry it gets blended into the skin quickly looking natural. The sponge provided is of really good quality, but I prefer using a brush with it for lighter coverage, as with the sponge the application gets slightly heavy and you get better coverage as well especially with the patting motion. When used wet it really gives medium coverage in a single layer itself almost like a liquid foundation, but looks patchy and uneven so I prefer using it dry only. I have also used it to set my foundation and it works pretty well that way giving a tad bit more coverage and keeps the liquid foundation in place.
The powder is very smooth and creamy in texture, it is extremely finely milled and soft to touch hence does not settle in pores and lines much. It is not at all chalky or hard unlike some compact powders. It has light to medium coverage. Just one layer will give you light coverage and will slightly even out skin tone to give a more presentable look, but it can be easily layered , due to the smooth texture it gets blended very well onto skin and does not look cakey when layered.
I have combination skin and this powder has semi matte finish and slightly blurs our pores and imperfections. If you have really dry skin then it has to be moisturized well before application or else it well cling to dry patches. The oil control part is pretty average and my t-zone tends to get oily within 2-3 hours of applying it, hence I need to blot often. But on the rest of the face it looks really good and has a decent lasting power for about 4- 5 hours, which is not that bad for a powder. But if you have really oily skin then it will fade more quickly. I feel it is decently priced as the texture and coverage are really good.
What I like about NYX Twin Cake Powder:
- Comes in attractive and sturdy packaging
- Extremely finely milled smooth silky powder
- Has Light to medium buildable coverage
- Decent staying power
- Has SPF
- Does not look cakey or heavy
- There are many shades
What I don’t like about NYX Twin Cake Powder:
- Poor oil control
- Dry skin needs to be moisturized well before application
- Gets patchy when applied wet
- If you are looking for medium to full coverage then this is not for you
Price: Rs 850
VNA Rating: 3.5/5
Do I recommend NYX Twin Cake Powder? It is a good compact powder especially for normal to combination skin, which gives a polished and presentable look quickly and the texture is amazing. I wish the oil control was better but otherwise if you get a good shade match then it definitely go for it!
