MAC Matte Lipstick in Velvet Teddy Review
By Contributor: Ritam
So Ladies, have any of you ever hated something because you never tried it, and once you did, you just fell plunging and headfast in love? This is pretty much my story with Nude lipsticks, especially Velvet Teddy. I have always been a fan of colors- the louder and brighter, the better. So, I always thought I would never buy a beige or nude lipstick, as I thought they’d be dull and boring. Oh boy, how wrong I was! Anyhow, I still don’t remember why I decided to try a nude lipstick in the first place, but I’m glad I did and picked up MAC Velvet Teddy. It has since then become my go to lipstick, especially when I want to create a warmer look, and contour my face. A nude lipstick just goes beautifully with that look, and it looks really classy in my opinion. Also, it’s a must have
color for those who like to concentrate more on their eye makeup, as it offsets the balance between the eyes and the lips.
MAC Claims: MAC describes it as Deep-tone Beige with a matte finish.
My Review:
Whenever I say the name of this lipstick out loud I always think of a yummy Red Velvet cake. Oh, Yes, I’m a foodie, I think of food all the time! Velvet Teddy is a Matte lipstick, but it’s not very drying and glides on smoothly, unlike let’s say MAC Ruby Woo. Although, I don’t think this lipstick can be worn over chapped lips, as because of its color, it’ll really highlight the dryness of one’s lips.
Even though MAC describes this lipstick as deep-tone beige, I feel on my skin (for reference I think I’m a MAC NC 35), it has a light pinkish tinge along with beige. In fact, it looks quite different when I wear it in the day, and when I wear it at night. When photographed in a flash, it gives a more beige-toned look and sometimes tends to wash out my face. In natural light, it gives a softer pinkish toned nude and goes quite well for a toned down, no make up look. I like to wear this lipstick more in the day, as it looks very natural on my lips, as it’s decently close to my natural lip color as well. This lipstick is well pigmented as it’s a matte lipstick, and you do get the color in one swipe, but I generally use two coats of this lipstick.
I think this is a great nude shade for the fair and medium Indian skin tones, however, I do feel that this shade might wash out the sexy-duskier beauties.
The staying power of this lipstick is actually quite good. It stays for about 4 to 5 hours, even with a snack in between; I once gulped down a large cup of Frozen yogurt (Slurp! Slurp!) and this lipstick stayed put even after that!!! Though it’s staying power is definitely weaker than the other MAC Mattes I’ve tried like Russian Red, Ruby Woo and So Chaud.
Hits
- A soft pinkish-toned nude, with a warm undertone provides a very natural lip color.
- Despite being a Matte lipstick, it glides on smoothly and is not very drying.
- Can be worn on a daily basis and great for pairing up with loud eyes or for creating a no make up look.
Misses
- Might Wash out the duskier skin tones, especially when photographed in Flash.
- Staying power of this lipstick is not as high as other more pigmented MAC Matte lipsticks.

This is one of my favorite lipsticks and it’s my fail-safe lipstick. I sometimes do my make up and try on a host of lipsticks that just don’t seem to be going with my clothes and whenever that situation arises, I just come back to my Velvet Teddy as it goes just about with anything. I will definitely be repurchasing this over and over again till MAC discontinues this or I get over this. Who am I kidding, that’s not happening!
